Our current project explores climate change through the lens of plant life—its fragility, resilience, and its fragile existence within human-made structures. Our working title, Vitrines of a Vanishing World, draws simultaneously from the aspirations of botanical gardens and the historical tradition of Vanitas painting. Both serve as conceptual foils and subject matter: botanical gardens as spaces of preservation, knowledge, and sanctuary; Vanitas paintings as meditations on transience and mortality. Brought together, they frame an altogether contemporary concern—ecocide.

This work positions botanical gardens not merely as aesthetic or scientific sites, but as cultural spaces where humanity has long staged its relationship to the natural world. Historically, they were places of colonial collection and categorization; today, they emerge as sanctuaries, offering glimpses of biodiversity that is increasingly threatened. Within this context, our paintings function as vitrines—containers of memory, grief, and reverence. They attempt to capture both the intricate beauty of plant life and the fragility of ecosystems under the pressures of climate collapse.
